One minute things feel manageable — the next, everything at home feels tense, emotional, or on edge.
You can feel it building in the house.
The pressure. The worry. The constant thinking about what needs to happen next.
Your teen might be trying one day and completely shut down the next.
They might feel overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or unsure where to even start.
And while they are carrying all of that… you are carrying it too.
Trying to support them
Trying to say the right thing
Trying not to make it worse
But still feeling like whatever you do can land as more pressure.
This is the part nobody really talks about.
Exam stress doesn’t just sit with your teen — it moves through the whole family.
Your teen might be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck or unsure how to start.
They might avoid revision, lose focus, panic in exams, or shut down completely.
And while they are dealing with all of that… you are trying to support them, hold things together, and make sense of what’s happening.
You’re thinking about results, the future, next steps, confidence, and what happens if things start to slip.
Even when that worry comes from love — they feel it.
And once that pressure builds, their brain can move into panic, shutdown, avoidance or freeze.
- Your teen is overwhelmed, anxious, or stressed — and not coping in the way they usually would
- They might panic, shut down, avoid revision, or say “I don’t care” when you know they do
- You can see them starting to crumble under the pressure — but don’t know how to help without making it worse
- You’re trying to support without nagging — but it still lands as pressure
- Your teen swings between trying hard and completely shutting down
- You’re worrying about their future while trying not to overwhelm them now
- The atmosphere at home feels tense, fragile, and exhausting
Because when pressure builds like this, doing more doesn’t help — responding differently does.
Everything does not depend on these exams — but when it feels that way, both you and your teen can get pulled into a cycle of pressure, anxiety, and shutdown.
Here’s what changes things:
More pressure doesn’t lead to better results.
It leads to more overwhelm.
What helps is reducing the pressure — and knowing how to respond differently.
Because when you become steadier, your teen can start to feel safer, calmer, and more able to cope.
And that’s where things begin to shift.

- Reduce the pressure that is making your teen feel anxious, overwhelmed or shut down
- Help your teen manage anxiety, feel more confident, and approach exams with more clarity and control
- Support your teen with focus, motivation, revision planning and next steps — without it feeling forced or pressured
- Understand what is really driving their reactions, even when it doesn’t make sense on the surface
- Recognise when your own worry is increasing pressure, and how to shift that quickly
- Respond more calmly in the moments that usually escalate into conflict or panic
- Create a steadier, calmer atmosphere at home for both of you

Meet Laura Thomas
I’m a psychotherapist, parenting coach and mentor, author, and mum of two teens. For over 22 years I’ve supported families through some of the hardest parts of adolescence — anxiety, shutdown, school avoidance, emotional overwhelm and the constant uncertainty that can come with it.
I created Parentology World because I kept seeing the same thing: when a teen struggles, parents are told to stay calm and hold the line, but rarely given the tools to actually do that in real life.
This work is practical, grounded, and rooted in both professional expertise and lived experience. I know how much exam pressure can take over a family — and I also know that things can shift faster than you think when the right support is in place.

What families often say after support
"I finally understood what was actually going on instead of just reacting to the behaviour. It changed how I spoke to my daughter almost immediately."
— Parent of a Year 11 student"Laura is great — she told me things that I’d not heard before which work, including turning upside down to stop the thoughts!"
— Teen, 16"This was practical, not fluffy. I came away knowing what to do in the exact moments we usually spiral."
— Parent of a teen with exam anxiety"The biggest shift was not just in my son — it was in me. Once I felt steadier, he stopped shutting down so much."

A Steadier Way Through
You should leave the sessions feeling clearer about what is happening, more confident in how to respond, and more supported through the pressure of exam season.
I will work directly with you and/or your teen to ease anxiety, build confidence, and help them feel more in control of their exams and what comes next.
This is not about perfection. It is about helping you and your teen feel steadier and more able to cope — so you can move through this period with less panic and more clarity.
— LAURA THOMAS, PARENTOLOGY WORLDExam stress rarely gets better by waiting it out.
The longer pressure builds, the harder it can be to untangle and settle.
Support is available until July and is most effective when you start before things escalate.
But if it already feels like everything is tipping — it’s not too late to turn things around.
Yes — Let’s Get StartedQuestions parents often ask
What if my teen will not engage?
That is very common, and this support can still help. When a parent becomes steadier and responds differently, the whole dynamic can begin to shift. You do not need full teen buy-in to start improving things.
Is this for the parent or the teen?
It is for either of you or both. Support is flexible and tailored to what your family needs most during exam season. Evening sessions available.
Is this therapy?
This is practical, structured support focused on understanding pressure, reducing escalation, and helping families respond more effectively in real life.
Will this help with exam performance?
Yes, indirectly. The goal is not to force results but to reduce the pressure that interferes with focus, confidence and engagement. When the system feels calmer, teens often function better.
Is it only for GCSEs and A Levels?
No. It is also suitable for end-of-year exams and stressful transitions such as moving to secondary school, sixth form, college or university.
When should we start?
Earlier is always easier. This works best before stress escalates too far, but it can still be incredibly helpful if things are already wobbling.
Your teen does not need more pressure.
They need a steadier system around them.
If home is feeling tense, fragile or exhausting right now, you do not have to keep guessing your way through it. There is another way to support your teen — one that reduces panic instead of adding to it.
Let this be the point where things start to feel calmer, clearer and more manageable for all of you.
