One minute things feel manageable — the next, everything feels tense, emotional, or on edge.

You can feel it building. The pressure. The expectations. The constant sense that something needs to happen. But you have no idea what to say or do to help your teen.

Your teen might be trying one day and completely shut down the next. They might feel overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or unsure where to even start. Some days they’re revising. Other days they’re avoiding it completely. Saying “I don’t care”… when underneath, they’re not coping.

Trying to keep up
Trying to stay on track
Trying not to fall behind

And you are running behind trying to do the best for them!

“I’m trying so hard to help… but whatever I do seems to add more pressure.”

This is what nobody’s talking about…

We know pressure can impact mental health. But when a teen becomes overwhelmed, it doesn’t just affect how they feel — it directly impacts how they think.

When the brain is under pressure, it shifts into a stress response. And in that state, logical thinking, memory recall, focus and problem-solving all become less accessible.

So even if your teen has revised, even if they understand the content — they may not be able to access it when it matters.

And for some teens, that same overwhelm shows up differently — as avoidance, procrastination, or not revising at all.

Not because they don’t care, but because their brain is overloaded, stuck, or unsure where to begin.

This is why you can see a teen who is capable, prepared, or even wanting to do well — suddenly blank in an exam, lose focus, or disengage completely.

Because under pressure, the brain prioritises coping over thinking.

It’s not a lack of effort. It’s not a lack of ability.
It’s a brain under pressure.

The world won’t end because of these exams.

Schools often have to focus on results, targets, and outcomes — and that can make it feel like your teen’s whole future is decided by what happens over a few weeks.

But that simply isn’t true.

There are multiple pathways, second chances, alternative routes, and opportunities that don’t get talked about enough. College options, resits, different courses, different timelines — there is not just one way forward.

Your teen’s future is not decided by a set of exams taken under pressure.

What matters far more is their wellbeing, their confidence, and their ability to stay steady enough to keep going — even when things feel hard.

Because more pressure and more expectation doesn’t create better outcomes — it increases the risk of anxiety, shutdown, and damage to self-esteem.

Here’s what actually changes things:

More pressure doesn’t lead to better results. It leads to more overwhelm.

What helps is reducing the pressure — and knowing how to respond differently.

Because when you become steadier, your teen can start to feel safer, calmer, and more able to cope.

And that’s where things begin to shift.

Introducing

Introducing the RESET approach

We take a step back. We breathe. And we look at what actually needs to happen — and what support your teen needs to be able to do it.

We look at the bigger picture.

This isn’t just about pushing through exams. It’s about understanding what’s getting in the way, reducing the pressure, and helping your teen feel more able to cope.

What’s going on for them right now?

What do they need — practically and emotionally — to move forward?

Together, we create a plan that works for them.

That might include:

  • Managing overwhelm and anxiety
  • Supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Building confidence and self-esteem
  • Creating a realistic approach to revision
  • Helping them re-engage if they’ve shut down
  • Exploring future options and next steps

Because this is about far more than learning how to answer a 12-mark question.

It’s about helping your teen feel steadier, clearer, and more able to move forward — in exams and beyond.

“You do not need more pressure. You need a steadier way through — for you and your teen.”

Support for teens, parents or both
Laura Thomas

Meet Laura Thomas

I’m a psychotherapist, parenting coach and mentor, author, and mum of two teens. For over 22 years I’ve supported families through some of the hardest parts of adolescence — anxiety, shutdown, school avoidance, emotional overwhelm and the constant uncertainty that can come with it.

I created Parentology World because I kept seeing the same thing: when a teen struggles, parents are told to stay calm and hold the line, but rarely given the tools to actually do that in real life.

This work is practical, grounded, and rooted in both professional expertise and lived experience. I know how much exam pressure can take over a family — and I also know that things can shift faster than you think when the right support is in place.

Everything is grounded in my RESET approach — a practical way of easing pressure and helping families feel calmer, clearer, and more in control.

You and your teen will feel back in control.

Clearer about what’s actually happening, more confident in how to move forward, and more able to face the exam season without everything feeling so overwhelming.

Instead of second-guessing yourself or feeling like you’re getting it wrong, you’ll have a clearer sense of what to do — and when to step in or step back.

Your teen will begin to feel more settled, more reassured, and more able to cope with the pressure in front of them — rather than shutting down, avoiding, or becoming overwhelmed by it.

We don’t remove pressure completely — because some pressure is part of exams — but we change how it is experienced.

We use the pressure to gently move things forward, rather than letting it build into anxiety, panic, or shutdown.

At the same time, we are protecting and supporting your teen’s mental health and wellbeing — so they can think more clearly, feel more capable, and access what they know when it matters.

This is about helping both of you feel steadier, more confident, and more in control — not just of the exams, but of how you move through them.

— Laura Thomas, Parentology World

Your teen does not need more pressure.
They need a steadier system around them.

Because when pressure keeps building, it doesn’t create better results — it creates more overwhelm, more shutdown, and more self-doubt.

And if things already feel tense, fragile or exhausting at home right now, that’s not a sign you’re getting it wrong — it’s a sign something needs to shift.

You don’t have to keep guessing your way through this.

There is another way to support your teen — one that reduces panic instead of adding to it, and helps them feel calmer, clearer, and more able to cope with what’s in front of them.

Let this be the point where things start to feel different.
Steadier.
Clearer.
More manageable — for both of you.

Questions parents often ask

What if my teen will not engage?

That is very common, and this support can still help. When a parent becomes steadier and responds differently, the whole dynamic can begin to shift. You do not need full teen buy-in to start improving things.

Is this for the parent or the teen?

It is for either of you or both. Support is flexible and tailored to what your family needs most during exam season. Evening sessions available.

Is this therapy?

This is practical, structured support focused on understanding pressure, reducing escalation, and helping families respond more effectively in real life.

Will this help with exam performance?

Yes, indirectly. The goal is not to force results but to reduce the pressure that interferes with focus, confidence and engagement. When the system feels calmer, teens often function better.

Is it only for GCSEs, A Levels or SATs?

No. It is also suitable for end-of-year exams and stressful transitions such as moving to secondary school, sixth form, college or university.

When should we start?

Earlier is always easier. This works best before stress escalates too far, but it can still be incredibly helpful if things are already wobbling.

You are in the right place to get this back on track and support your teen fully.

Start with one session, get some clarity, and then we can talk through what support is needed from there.
